Getting there and parking

What nobody else tells you

The car park sits up on the rocks: a large level area, partly shaded, with attendants. The access road is narrow but manageable. For the satnav: Via Provinciale Ovest, 57031 Capoliveri — don't type in the beach, use 42.762297, 10.3523.

The beach

Shade — to the right by the wall as you come down the path

8 am1–2 pm8 pm

The shade comes from the wall and the trees growing on top of it. Come in the afternoon and you'll need your own parasol.

Wind

Wind rose for Felciaio: avoid in south and southeast winds; north, northeast and northwest are good. East, southwest and west not yet logged. N NE E SE S SW W NW

South and southeast bring algae

Felciaio sits on the south coast: in south and southeast winds the algae wash in; in a north wind the water is clear. The one beach value we've checked across several weather patterns — if you're flexible, look at the wind direction before you set off.

  • Avoid: south, southeast — algae
  • Good: north, northeast, northwest — clear water
  • Not yet logged: east, southwest, west

When it's full: just keep walking

Elba's beaches fill early — Italian families arrive in good time. The trick: almost all of them stay near the bar and lie down shoulder to shoulder there.

Walk to the far end of the beach and wade the three metres through the water into the next cove. There you'll often find nought to three people. The crowd ends after a few metres.

Food and drink

B.Style Ristoro Felciaio

The only bar on the beach, to the right where the path ends. Hires out loungers and parasols.

Aperol Spritz €10.00
Espresso €3.00

Well above the island average. There's no alternative within walking distance — a textbook monopoly markup. If you want to save, bring your own water and food.

The material shows the algae day in a south wind — honest, but not representative. Comparison shots in a north wind to follow.

Our verdict

In one sentence
[verdict to follow]
Not worth it if …

… the wind is from the south or southeast. The algae pile up metres deep.
… you're unsteady on your feet. The walk back uphill is no stroll.
… you set off after 11 am. Forty spaces go quickly.

Where to stay

From late morning on, the car park is the bottleneck. If you want to be down there first thing, stay within walking distance and skip the search.

Lido di Capoliveri is about a kilometre away; Zuccale, Norsi and Naregno are a few minutes by car.
